Day 7 - Mainz

We started the day off with our very dear Kneeland getting himself locked in the bus bathroom, making many attempts at breaking down the door, passing paper through a hole, and hitting the SOS button. After Kneeland was so miraculously rescued, we all relaxed until we arrived at the breathtaking St. Martins Cathedral for our morning prayer but also for a bit of exploration. After playing explorer for a half hour or so we broke up into our small groups because at this point, being teenagers, we needed food and we needed it as soon as possible. After a delicious Kebap sandwich for quite a few groups, it was time to seek out the perfect place to start our afternoon Lectio. John 1:1-18 was the chosen passage today and the message that really stuck out to me was that the darkness will never overcome the light.  (“…in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1:4-5)   After sharing our interpretations of the passage it was time to meet up with all the other group and set out on what the girls had been begging for since we stepped foot in Germany….shopping! However, the special treat was that there were no designated adults to each group. All of the adults definitely needed a bit of a break from us since we are quite a handful. After an hour and a half of torture for the boys, dragging them from H&M to random German clothing stores, our shopping session came to end and it was time to get back to the hotel. Of course, we had our dinner, which was absolutely heavenly as usual. Our dinner was a bit different on this night though because it was our fancy dinner. Everyone was dressed to impress at dinner all ready for the red carpet. After a filling dinner we retreated back to the hotel to finish up the night. Our discussion of the night revolved around how this trip had changed  us spiritually, emotionally, and in many other ways.  After a heartfelt discussion, we were lead in compline by Mary. The night came to a perfect end when our very own Matthew Montgomery Arehart accidentally slammed his elbow on the table pretty hard. SHOUTOUT TO MATTHEW.

Day 6- Frankfurt am Main

Day 6- Frankfurt

“Faith does not need to be proven.”

The visiting priest, Dorothee, was a missionary from Romania.  She based her sermon off of this inspirational quote. Dorothee led an interesting rectors forum about her missionary work in Romania. It was amazing to hear her stories of supporting underprivileged families.  The service began with the euphonious voices of the Trinity College Choir of Dublin. After church, Big Shawn took us to an outdoor café near the base of the famous Hairy Asparagus (which is actually like a mini space needle). The restaurant served authentic German food, which included an all you can eat meat platter and hand cheese with “music”. Adam and Jim were the brave ones in the group, ordering both of these massive dishes. As the food came out, the hand cheese with music was actually cheese soaked in vinegar but to our surprise the music did not come until later(we’re talking about farts) if you can catch my drift. Following the flatulent cheese, Adam and Jim were served the largest platter of meat anyone has ever seen in their life. It was five pounds of Germany’s best meats, and Adam and Jim ate it all. We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the beautiful city of Frankfurt. We went into the Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral) which is a very large gothic church that we decided would be a perfect location to play one of the EYC’s favorite games, murder in the cathedral. Matthew lead Lectio Divina in the side chapel of the church making it a very moving experience. Following Lectio Divina, we broke up into small groups and explored Frankfurt. Some groups went shopping while others visited the beautiful sites of old Frankfurt. While exploring Ali and Margaret learned that mimes only want you for your money. For dinner we all met at the Opera House and then went to the food festival on a near by street and got to enjoy falafels and shwarmas by the “Wir Essen Hier” fountain. After a long walk back to the hotel, we gathered for compline where we discussed what it means to be in such a wonderful community that is the Episcopal Church. Then Matthew being the amazing youth leader that he is, took us out for a late night gelato run where Kneeland and I both treated ourselves to several servings of gelato. We honestly do not want this trip to end and really don’t want to come home (but we will).  Guten Nacht!

                        Love,

Nae Nae and Lae Lae (Kneeland and Ali)

Day 5- Relocating to Frankfurt

Today was day five of our journey to Frankfurt.  Very soon after we started the bus Kneeland realized that he had accidentally stolen the hotel coffee cup, so we had to drop him off and turn back around to pick it up, it was really funny. We started off on a two hour bus ride that ended at Burg Eltz Castle in Münstermaifeld. The earliest sections of the castle were from the 12th century and the most recent sections of the castle were from the 17th century. Our guide lead us through ten rooms out of the one hundred. It had forty fireplaces and twenty bathrooms without running water. The canopy bed in the master bedroom was from the early 15th century, and in the bedroom was a small chapel built into the side of the castle. We went through the living areas, bedrooms, dinning room, and kitchen. They used to hang the meat and bread from the ceiling because that was the only place that the rats couldn’t reach it.  After the tour we went down to the castle museum, which held ancient swords, knives, guns, cannons, jewels and more. We came back up and ate lunch at the Castle Café, and had to wait in line forever.  The food was interesting and we had a lot of stares because we’re American. After lunch we all went into the souvenir shop and looked around. Next the group went down to the river and up a trail to do Lectio Divina. It was on Matthew 22:34-40, and as we wrote down our feelings and thoughts on the scripture, we all experienced a deep spiritual moment. We then split into our small groups and talked about it while we walked back. Matthew’s group took a detour through the river and I (Elizabeth) fell and my shoes were soaked for the rest of the day, it was pretty funny. Earlier on the bus ride, the reading that Matthew read on the bus was about how Moses went up Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments. Sandy elaborated on psalm saying how there were 600 something laws that were already in place from previous year, but God told Moses to only follow the new Ten Commandments which he had given him. The next reading was Psalm 46. “Be still and know that I am God.” God was prompting the people to have faith in him and him alone, for he would lead them through the desert in due time. We drove to Frankfurt and went to dinner at the Sunset bar, and most everyone had pizza. We came back into the hotel and did Compline (page 127 of the BCP). We split up into small groups and discussed touchy topics in our lives and we bonded so well together. It was pretty speciticallur to connect with everyone. After that really dramatic talk, we went to bed. WELL G-NIGHT! SWEET DREAMS!!! XOXOXO
